Used to a blundering, muddle-headed person, mainly in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. It is thought to be an alteration of the earlier term ‘dunderhead’, which had the same meaning. An example occurs in Oliver Twist, by Charles Dickens, where a working-class man uses it to another.
